Corabell and Her Beast Page 6
I make it to the ball room with out killing Thomas. That’s good right? He smiles at me and heads back up the stairs to hurry my wife along.
I talk to a few lords and dukes until I hear the crowd go silent. I turn to see what has everyone being silent and gasp.
Rose comes in first in a bright purple gown, no sleeves, tight bodice and flowing. She looks like the Princess she is. I had her title and Clayton’s changed once my mother and fathers divorce was final. She looks beautiful!
Next comes Lady Mary. She’s in a golden gown, no sleeves, tight bodice, and a full skirt. I guess they all took after my wife’s gown. Lady Mary is a permanent fixture at court and actively seeking a good husband.
Then my wife enters. She’s wearing the same ruby red dress as when I met her. This time I’m not so shocked so I stare. It has no sleeves, a tight bodice, and a full skirt that swishes when she moves. It has beading across the bodice and down the front that make it sparkle. It’s beautiful on her.
It’s a daring dress, all three are. But my wife is making a fashion statement and I wouldn’t expect anything less from her or her friends. They glide towards me and curtsy before going to dance with others.
I pull Corabell close and we dance the night away. It’s a relief to finally be here and be at peace.
We stop dancing sometime later to make the announcements we had planned. I get half way through them when Corabell stops me. She looks out over the crowd and smiles sweetly. I don’t know what she has planned but I hope it’s fast. I’m hungry and want out of this stuffy shirt.
“I hope you all are having a wonderful night. I know that a few of you have wondered about Marshall and I’s relationship. I’ve heard the rumors and I ignored them for the most part. But earlier today I overheard my maid, who I thought was a friend, say some things that upset me.” She pauses and looks over at Thomas who has said maid standing next to him.
I place my hand on Corabell’s lower back and try to encourage her to go on. I give her my strength because I know she needs it right now.
“I came here not knowing what my future held. It was a confusing time where I learned the truth about my family. With out really knowing what to expect I left my life and my sisters’ life in the hands of an incredibly good friend. He alone decided that I didn’t need to know any more than the fact that I am the Duchess of the Northern Kingdom and that I could choose my own future.” She smiles over at her sisters and they run up on stage with us.
“I chose to marry a man I didn’t know. It was because I thought I wasn’t wanted by any other.” Lady Mary is crying and Rose is trying to calm her down.
“We all love you, Corabell.” Rose yells up at her.
“In the months that I have been here I have come to love Marshall more than anything else in this kingdom. When I heard my maid saying that I was nothing, but a social climber and that King Marshall could do better, if only he didn’t allow me to abolish the mistress law. She would have a chance to sway him away.” Corabell is openly crying now. I wipe the tears away and stay silent.
“Thomas heard her say this too. He was angry and had a right to be. I am saddened to say that when Thomas questioned her about this, she threatened not only my life but the life of my unborn child.” There are gasps all around including me.
I had no idea she was pregnant. I mean we do have sex all the time, but I didn’t know. I place my hand on her stomach and smile down at her.
“I want you all to know that I love Marshall and that an heir is on the way. I know many of you are not as horrible as Julie is. I thank you for that.” She turns to me and I hug her.
“Thomas take Julie to the dungeons. We will deal with her later. Everyone! I would like to thank you all for coming, again. We now have more to celebrate, an heir is on the way.” I yell over the crowd. Everyone laughs and claps.
The music starts back up and I head over to the buffet to grab myself and Corabell some food. We eat and dance into the night.
It’s almost midnight when there’s a green flash of light and the witch who cursed me is standing in front of Corabell and myself. I gently push Corabell behind me and motion for Thomas to stand next to me.
“King Marshall! It’s so good to see you again.” She says in that sing song voice she has.
“What do you want, Witch?” I ask. Trying not to growl.
“I came to remove the curse! But if you want to keep it by all means go ahead.” She says and I sigh.
I had hoped that was why she was here and not to take Corabell or my unborn child from me.
“Oh! You can have this curse, I don’t want it.” I tell her.
“You found love. The true kind. She doesn’t mind that you are a beast, she loves you anyway. You aren’t as bad as you once were. I was going to come months ago but I waited until she told you. It was a smart move on my part! It got you to chance some laws that I didn’t much care for.” She says.
I nod and wait for her to say or do more. She smiles and waves her hand in the air and blue sparks fly out. After a few minutes I no longer feel the beast inside me trying to get out.
“I know you two will have an incredibly happy life together! Don’t make me return, King Marshall.” With that she was gone.
I turn and look at the gathered crowd. They all stare in amazement at what just happen. I try to summon the beast and feel nothing. I laugh and pick up Corabell. I spin her around smiling. It truly is a good day.
Epilogue
Corabell 1 year later
I sigh when I realize Gabriel is fast asleep, finally. He’s a handful just like his father. At six months old I notice the differences between him and his twin brother, Raymond.
Raymond is very independent where as Gabriel always wants to be held and coddled. Ray is peaceful as Gabe cries all the time.
I walk out of the nursery and try to be silent, so I don’t wake them. I really don’t want to go back in there right now.
I’m pregnant again and this time I hope it’s a little girl. There are to many boys running around here. Even though they aren’t walking yet.
I run into Thomas in the hall and he has a grim look on his face. I don’t know what that’s about. I try to walk around him, but he stops me.
“What, Thomas? I’m hungry, tired and it’s terribly hot in here!” I tell him. He sighs and nods.
“We have a problem, my Queen. You are needed in the throne room. We have a guest. I’ll get you a snack.” He waves down a passing guard and tells him to get me something quickly and then escorts me to the throne room.
Once there the guard hands me some bread and cheese and I eat it as I walk in. No point in hiding it, everyone knows I’m pregnant and cranky.
I stop dead in my tracks when I see my father standing in front of my husband. Both men have hard looks in their eyes and it worries me. I thought I was clear when I said I never wanted to see him again.
“Father.” I say with a hard tone in my voice.
I go and stand next to my husband, but he insists I sit on my throne. Most likely a power play but also because of the baby.
I look down on my father and wait.
Marshall
When I heard that Corabell’s father, Winston James, was on the grounds I flipped out. I immediately wanted him escorted away or thrown in the dungeon. But he happen to ask for me so I granted him an audience.
I asked for Corabell to be present, even though she should be resting. I knew she would want to know he’s here and what he has to say. She may have told me she never wanted to see him again, but I know her. She will want answers.
I sit her on her throne and wait beside her for her father to explain why he is here. Now of all times.
“Corabell, how are you?” He says and I growl next to her. She places her hand on my arm and smiles up at me.
“I’m well, father. Why are you here? No sense in pleasantries.” She tells him. That’s my no non-sense wife.
“Can’t I come and visit my daughter.” He asks with a
sly grin on his face.
“No, you can’t. I’m guessing you were told that when you were arrested and brought here. Plus, you have three daughters that you haven’t spoken to in almost two years. So, why now?” Corabell says. I can tell she just wants him gone but she is strong and holding her own.
“Are you going to let her talk to me like that?” He asks me.
“Yes, I am, actually. She is her own person and a great ruler. When she speaks, she speaks for both of us.” I tell him. It’s the truth.
“Well then, yes, how are my darling twins?” He asks like he cares.
“Doing good! They have adjusted well to their titles here. No thanks to you. Now what do you want?” Corabell sound angry now.
“Money! Of course. Why else would I come to my whore of a daughter?” He says with a sneer.
“Whore? Well that’s a new one. Isn’t it dear?” Corabell asks me. I’m trying not to kill this man and she is joking.
“Yeah I guess it is. No, Winston we will not give you any money.” I tell him. He looks angry.
“Why not? After all I am the one who delivered you a Queen. I put her on that throne!” He yells up at us. The guards start to step in and I allow them.
“First father, you didn’t put me here. Mother left me a lot of money and so did her family. Plus, a title, Duchess of the Northern Kingdom. With that I am an heiress and I didn’t have to marry. I chose to.” Winston’s face went pale. He knew all long that he had no leverage and he still tried to get money.
“Winston James, I Queen Corabell, duchess of the Northern kingdom, charge you with treason. Guards!” She says with a firm voice.
“Know that, without you, I would never have found that letter mother wrote me. I never would have claimed my place in court and I would still be in a horrible place, unmarried and wondering what life held. You set me on the path I am now on! For that I thank you, but also know that I would have had a better life if you never ruined my mothers in the first place.” Corabell has tears running down her face and I pull her close.
“Take him away. I never want to see him again.” I tell the guards.
I sit her back down and wait for her to calm before I say anything. Even then I’m not sure what to say.
Thomas on the other hand is walking back in the room holding a bowl. He hands it to Corabell and we all start laughing.
“Cake, really Thomas. You think I need cake right now.” She says but I know she is kidding because she eats it and smiles.
“Thought it would help. Plus, I had two slices waiting on you two to finish up and the cook got mad at me. So, I told her I would bring you a piece and she calmed down.” We all bust out laughing at that. Thomas is god at breaking the tension.
With that we all leave the throne room and go in search of the boys. My life has changed so much in two years and it was all for the better.
Corabell was what I needed to complete my life and break the curse that kept me from truly living. Without her I would still be in a dark place wondering why I still live.
Happy ever after’s do exist!!!
Note
So, I had this bright idea to create my own fairy tale. I think it turned out good. It distracted me from some of the things happening in my life and gave me a reason to keep believing.
I have an amazing family and I wouldn’t change that for anything. They have been by my side through the dark times and I do see a light at the end of this.
I hope you all enjoy this story.
